What does it truly mean to serve as a dentist within a dental hygiene program? This interactive Mastermind explores the evolving role, responsibilities, and impact of dentists in hygiene education, including leadership expectations, faculty collaboration, CODA considerations, and how to best support student learning and clinical education.
Objectives:
- Clarify the role and expectations of dentists working within dental hygiene programs.
- Describe how CODA standards influence faculty responsibilities and teaching preparation.
- Identify strategies to effectively support dental hygiene faculty and clinical instruction.
- Reflect on leadership approaches that strengthen collaboration and student development within academic settings.
Educators Platform Masterminds are dynamic two-hour virtual sessions building on each other’s challenges, ideas and successes in the presence of a content expert. Mastermind sessions are thoughtfully facilitated to create an environment for like-minded colleagues to share and learn from one another with the goal of collective professional growth and development. Sessions are uniquely tailored to the needs of participants. Those attending will have the opportunity to create strong connections with other participants to last a whole career.
More about our content expert: Dr. Pia Staana has been involved in dental hygiene education since 2007, teaching at Foothill College and Chabot College before serving full-time at Foothill beginning in 2017 and earning tenure in 2020. She has also taught in the Dental Assisting Program for over a decade and assumed the role of Program Director in 2023. Her work centers on accreditation preparation, program development, faculty collaboration, and bringing a dentist’s perspective to dental hygiene education to support student learning and clinical education.
