1. AI Essentials: Unveiling AI's Impact on Education

While not new, artificial intelligence is beginning to emerge in the realm of education.  Since the release of ChatGPT in the Fall of 2022, the educational landscape has been able to explore the potential of AI technology in teaching and learning.  This session aims to delve into the principles of artificial intelligence and focus on a subset of artificial intelligence, Generative AI.  Drawing upon Roger’s Theory of Perceived Attributes, we will explore the applicability of artificial intelligence in education.  Through a systematic application of this theoretical framework, participants will engage in critical analyses aimed at uncovering the suitability of AI technology for enhancing the educational environment.  

Objectives:

• Gain a basic understanding of artificial intelligence principles and concepts, with a specific focus on Generative AI, to better understand its potential applications for teaching and learning.
• Explore Roger’s Theory of Perceived Attributes and systematically evaluate both the suitability and efficacy of artificial intelligence technology in enhancing teaching and learning.
• Engage in critical analyses and discussion around the benefits and challenges associated with integrating AI into educational practices.

2. Creating program policy Informed by Ethical and Professional Considerations

Description: 

Whether we like it or not, college students are already using Generative AI in their personal, professional, and academic lives. In a February 2024 panel, students expressed a desire for more guidance on this technology, as their coursework has been slow to adapt. By consulting Miller’s Pyramid of Clinical Competence and resources from the University of Michigan, this session will provide recommendations and tools for creating policies on the institution, department, and course level.

Objectives:

• Considerations for institutions and their policies on Generative AI usage
• Adopt and adapt a Generative AI usage policy for a department or course
• Use a decision tree and to invigilate, mitigate, or integrate Generative AI usage in assignments and assessments

. Time Saving Strategies with AI in the Dental Curriculum

Description: 

Learn how to work smarter, not harder by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in your curriculum development. No prior experience with AI is required. This session will feature a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, and hands-on activities. Participants will have the opportunity to develop AI-enhanced teaching modules tailored to their specific educational contexts. The use of practical application and group discussions will ensure participants are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively integrate artificial intelligence into their dental education practices.

Objectives:

• Compare different AI platforms for curriculum development.
• Discover the use of AI in developing instructional videos and class activities.
• Construct your own AI generated Powerpoints and exams.

 1. Clinical Assessment in the Age of AI: What does it mean to Use Authentic Assessment?

Description:

This session will kick off day 2 of ADAPT focussing on applications of AI in a clinical setting and go into innovative ways of assessing our students. Authentic assessment entails evaluating students’ ability to apply their learning to real-world situations.  Authentic assignments immerse learners in complex, lifelike scenarios that demand judgment and mirror professional workplace challenges.  These are the kinds of assessments that AI is not able to replicate and one of the reasons that authentic assessment is so applicable in today’s AI-driven landscape.  In this session, participants will explore the application of authentic assessment within a clinical context, specifically in dental hygiene treatment scenarios.  Within the scenario, students are tasked with analyzing various treatment options using critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while also interacting with AI.  Additionally, reflective writing will serve as a summative exercise, requiring students to justify their treatment decisions.

Objectives:

• Compare and contrast authentic assessment with conventional assessment.
• Appraise the presenter’s demonstration of authentic assessment in a dental hygiene clinic scenario where AI is employed in the process of determining best practices for dental hygiene treatment care.
•  Evaluate how reflective writing as an authentic assessment measure engages students in critical thinking and problem solving as they consider their treatment decisions, reflecting on what worked, what didn’t work, what would they do differently next time.

 2. Expanding Clinical Opportunities for Students with AI

With advancements in AI, there is a shift in how healthcare education is approached, offering opportunities for students to engage with cutting-edge technologies. This segment explores the integration of AI technologies into your clinical teaching practices to enhance student learning outcomes.

• Demonstrate proficiency in utilizing AI tools and technologies to develop virtual patient simulations.
• Explore the ways in which students interact with AI to improve clinical decision-making.

3. Privacy and the Law: The relationship between AI and Patient Health Information

Description: 

Generative AI models, by design, store and reference vast amounts of data to generate their output. In most cases, this includes any information they receive from users. This session will provide a brief overview of how dental educators can avoid HIPAA, FERPA, and other confidential information breaches when using Generative AI.

• Explore precautions when it comes to applying patient care scenerios in AI
• Know who to contact for further legal advice 

4. A Glimpse into the Future

Description: 

We will conclude our conference with other clinical applications of AI, discussion of ethical implications, and also a look at how AI will shape our clinical practice.
