This is an opportunity for you to join content expert Michelle Arnett, MS, RDH and other fellow educators to discuss innovative strategies on teaching motivational interviewing. When utilized, motivational interviewing is an effective communication approach for dental providers to motivate and improve patients’ oral health and support healthy behavioral changes. Students need an understanding of motivational interviewing, the “Spirit of MI,” principals, guiding strategies and rules to be able to employ motivational interviewing. Brief motivational interviewing will be discussed which is for dental providers who have limited time (5-10 minutes) to support behavior change in a clinical setting, and cultivates a safe environment for patients to discuss their concerns and ambivalence of change about current behaviors. To prepare students for their professional role, brief motivational training including coaching, feedback and role-playing is required to sustain communication skills. This mastermind is will illustrate a motivational interviewing curriculum thread that can be modified to fit your dental hygiene program.

Educators Platform Masterminds are dynamic two-hour virtual sessions building on each other’s challenges, ideas and successes in the presence of a content expert. Mastermind sessions are thoughtfully facilitated to create an environment for like-minded colleagues to share and learn from one another with the goal of collective professional growth and development. Sessions are uniquely tailored to the needs of participants. Those attending will have the opportunity to create strong connections with other participants to last a whole career.

More about our content expert: Ms. Michelle Arnett currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Primary Dental Care, Division of Dental Hygiene at the University of Minnesota (UMN) School of Dentistry (SOD). With 18 years of clinical practice experience and seven years in academics and research at the University of Michigan SOD and the UMN SOD, she has incorporated a variety of teaching methodologies and instructional strategies on motivational interviewing in a didactic and clinical setting. Her areas of research focus are motivational interviewing and periodontology. Within the last seven years, she has published 11 peer-reviewed articles and one textbook chapter on motivational interviewing.
