Meet Your Conference Facilitators

Jennifer E. Fehrenbacher PhD, LDH, CDA, EFDA
Jennifer Fehrenbacher is currently an assistant professor of dental assisting and dental hygiene at her alma mater, the University of Southern Indiana. She began her career in academia in 2006 as an adjunct faculty member working in the pre-clinic setting. She continued in this role until January of 2019 when she began working full time at USI as the clinic coordinator. Jennifer has a significant interest in curriculum and gaining any knowledge related to teaching which led to earning a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana State University and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Liberty University. She has served as the chair of her local ADHA chapter and currently serves as the advisor for the student dental assisting association at USI.

Jennifer Pieren, RDH, BSAS, MS, FADHA
Jennifer Pieren is a faculty member at Youngstown State University in Ohio and an adjunct professor at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. With over 25 years of experience in dental hygiene, including roles as Program Administrator and Clinic Coordinator, Prof. Pieren brings a wealth of practical and academic expertise to her teaching. She has taught all levels of clinical dental hygiene and a wide range of courses across the curriculum. Prof. Pieren is a faculty expert and presenter for the American Dental Hygienists’ Association National Board Review and presents courses at national, regional, and local events. She is the recipient of YSU’s Teaching Excellence Award and YSU’s Bitonte Health and Human Services Alumni of the Year Award. Prof. Pieren is co-editor of the textbook, Darby and Walsh Dental Hygiene: Theory and Practice (5th and 6th editions), and is also a Professional Fellow of the American Dental Hygienists' Association.

Khairunisa Hashmani, RDH, MA, EdD
Khairunisa (Nisa) Hashmani is an experienced clinical educator with a passion for advancing teaching standards through innovation and collaboration. She is an Assistant Professor at UTHealth Houston and has taught Preclinical and Clinical courses along with being first-year Clinic Coordinator. With a strong focus on faculty calibration, Nisa has developed simulation-based Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) that leverage self directed stations including videos, calibrated typodonts, and cases—to identify inconsistencies and foster faculty engagement. Through hands-on workshops and presentations, empowers educators to integrate OSCEs into their programs, enhancing consistency in clinical evaluation and supporting academic excellence. She has presented at local, state, national, and international conferences. She loves cooking, painting, event planning, and spending time with her family.

Kristel Montaño, MD, MEd
Dr. Kristel Montaño is a native New Mexican and a General Pediatrician. She completed both her undergraduate and medical degrees at UNM, followed by Pediatric Residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. s Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics at UNM, Dr. Montano’s primary interest is in Medical Education. She holds a Masters of Medical Education which she completed during her early years as faculty. She is involved in all levels of medical education at UNM, most notably as Co-Director of Medical Educator courses for both medical students and faculty, in which she teaches about curriculum development and integration of technology into teaching.

Michele Carr, EDD, RDH
Michele P. Carr is faculty Emeritus and former Chair, Division of Dental Hygiene at The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry in Columbus, Ohio. Michele has been involved nationally and locally serving on numerous professional committees such as the American Dental Education Association’s Council of Allied Dental Program Directors, The American Dental Education Association Continuing Education Advisory Committee, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association Council on Policy and Bylaws, The Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association Government Relations Committee, and the CODA Dental Hygiene Review Committee. She currently practices clinical hygiene part-time in a periodontal office and serves on the Ohio State Dental Board. In her capacity as a Board member Michele administers dental hygiene licensure examinations for CDCA-WREB-CITA. Michele has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters focusing on ultrasonics. Most recently she contributed to writing four chapters in the fourth edition of Ethics and Law in Dental Hygiene and is an Ask-the-Expert columnist for Dimensions in Dental Hygiene. Additionally, Michele serves as a consultant for Educator’s Platform preparing dental hygiene programs for accreditation.
